China vs US: Currency Battle Looms
Currency volatility has been rampant in 2010, and all in all we are near where we started the year. The important point is the strained relationship which continues between our governments which will effect global growth related to uncertainty and volatility. US pressure to effect China policy is such a touchy subject that markets become unsettled, this is reflected in the current unwinding and revaluing of positions by many fund managers.
Currency usually trends in one direction for many years (if you look back over charts) and since the combining of currencies to create the Euro on December 16th, 1995 governments have used currency tools as part of economic policy. The looming battle between the US and China will keep an unsettled wedge between valuation and logic for years to come in global equities.
World financial officials are warning that heightened tensions between nations over currency values pose a rising threat to a fragile global economy. Leaders at both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank say conflict between China and the United States over the value of the Chinese yuan could spiral into a more serious economic problem.
Fears of a looming international currency war helped send the dollar to an eight-month low against the euro Thursday.
World Bank President Robert Zoellick says tensions over currencies could undermine investor confidence at a time when the world is looking to the private sector to bolster growth

Exchange Rates, Currency Crisis and Monetary Cooperation in Asia $69 This book concentrates on exchange rates and their macroeconomic consequences, analytical and empirical issues relating to currency crises and policy responses and monetary and financial cooperation in Asia. It is truely pan-Asia-focused with chapters on China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia. |

Global Economic Effects of the Asian Currency Devaluations $3.98 The Asian financial crisis precipitated significant changes in real exchange rates in the region that substantially altered the volume and pattern of international trade. It was predicted that the crisis countries would increase their exports and, especially, reduce their imports. Japan, China, and the other non-crisis countries will experience more complex changes. The trade balances of the United States and Western Europe would deteriorate by about $40-50 billion as a result of the currency movements in Asia. Written at the height of the crisis, this study quantifies the impact of the currency changes on the individual countries in Asia, on the United States, on Europe and on other regions on a sector-by-sector basis. It analyzes the additional impact that might occur if China, a relative bystander in the crisis, were to devalue its currency as well. It then examines potential trade policy responses to these developments including the risk of an upsurge in protectionist pressure in the United States. |

Cannibal Fictions $33.15 Objects of fear and fascination, cannibals have long signified an elemental otherness, an existence outside the bounds of normalcy. In the American imagination, the figure of the cannibal has evolved tellingly over time, as Jeff Berglund shows in this study encompassing a strikingly eclectic collection of cultural, literary, and cinematic texts. Cannibal Fictions brings together two discrete periods in U.S. history: the years between the Civil War and World War I, the high-water mark in America’s imperial presence, and the post-Vietnam era, when the nation was beginning to seriously question its own global agenda. Berglund shows how P. T. Barnum, in a traveling exhibit featuring so-called Fiji cannibals, served up an alien other for popular consumption, while Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Tarzan of the Apes series tapped into similar anxieties about the eruption of foreign elements into a homogeneous culture. Turning to the last decades of the twentieth century, Berglund considers how treatments of cannibalism variously perpetuated or subverted racist, sexist, and homophobic ideologies rooted in earlier times. Fannie Flagg’s novel Fried Green Tomatoes invokes cannibalism to new effect, offering an explicit critique of racial, gender, and sexual politics (an element to a large extent suppressed in the movie adaptation). Recurring motifs in contemporary Native American writing suggest how Western expansion has, cannibalistically, laid the seeds of its own destruction. And James Dobson’s recent efforts to link the pro-life agenda to allegations of cannibalism in China testify still further to the currency and pervasiveness of this powerful trope. By highlighting practicesthat preclude the many from becoming one, these representations of cannibalism, Berglund argues, call into question the comforting national narrative of e pluribus unum. |
