4th-Century Bc Greek Art $13.01 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Red-figure vase painting is one of the most important styles of figural Greek vase painting. It developed in Athens around 530 BC and remained in use until the late 3rd century BC. It replaced the previously dominant style of Black-figure vase painting within a few decades. Its modern name is based on the figural depictions in red colour on a black background, in contrast to the preceding black-figure style with black figures on a red background. The most important areas of production, apart from Attica, were in Southern Italy. The style was also adopted in other parts of Greece. Etruria became an important centre of production outside the Greek World. Attic red-figure vases were exported throughout Greece and beyond. For a long time, they dominated the market for fine ceramics. Only few centres of pottery production could compete with Athens in terms of innovativeness, quality and production capacity. Of the red figure vases produced in Athens alone, more than 40,000 specimens and fragments survive today. From the second most important production centre, Southern Italy, more than 20,000 vases and fragments are preserved. Starting with the studies by John D. Beazley and Arthur Dale Trendall, the study of this style of art has made enormous progress. Some vases can be ascribed to individual artists or schools. The images provide irreplaceable evidence for the exploration of Greek cultural history, everyday life, iconography, and mythology. Black-figure scene on the Belly Amphora by the Andokides Painter (Munich 2301). Munich: Staatliche AntikensammlungenRed figure is, put simply, the reverse of the black figure technique. The paintings were applied to the shaped but unfired vessels after they had dried to a leathery, near-brittle texture. In … More: |

After Antiquity $48.96 Offers a comprehensive discussion of medieval and post-medieval pottery from central Greece and the Aegean, and considers the relationship between pottery and Mediterranean society, economy and culture in the post-Roman periods. The main part of the book focuses on pottery from Boeotia, particularly ceramics collected by the Cambridge and Bradford Boeotia intensive survey project. Vroom combines ceramic data from thirty selected Boeotian sites in order to create a regional classification system with 48 diagnostic wares, ranging from locally produced Red Slip wares and amphorae to imported glazed wares from Italy and Turkey. She explores the cultural, technological and socio-economic aspects of local pottery production and distribution, using archaeological, documentary and ethnographic evidence, but also considers the wider picture when looking at the imported tin-glazed wares from the 16th to 18th centuries. |

Excerpt: The term American Stoneware refers to the predominant houseware of nineteenth century North America stoneware pottery usually covered in a salt glaze and often decorated using cobalt oxide to produce bright blue decorations. The vernacular term “crocks” is often used to describe this type of pottery, though the term “crock” is not seen in period documents describing the ware. Additionally, while other types of stoneware were produced in America concurrently with itfor instance, ironstone, yellowware, and various types of chinain common usage of the term, “American Stoneware” refers to this specific type of pottery.Stoneware is pottery made out of clay of the stoneware category, fired to a high temperature (about 1200°C to 1315°C). The pottery becomes, essentially, stone. Salt-glazed pottery is a type of pottery produced by adding salt to a kiln to create a glass-like coating on the pottery. At just over 900°C, the salt (sodium chloride) vaporizes and bonds with the clay body. The sodium in the salt bonds with the silica in the clay, creating sodium silicate, or glass. A very commonly employed technique seen on American Stoneware is the use of cobalt decoration, where a dark gray mixture of clay, water and the expensive mineral cobalt oxide is painted onto the unfired vessels.
