Beverage Makers in China Turn to Canned Drinks to Generate New Business

Chinese males are increasingly faced with a perennial dilemma that has perplexed Western males for over half a century: Whether to buy a box of beer in glass bottles or cans. China’s beverage packaging market, once extremely glass-based, is rapidly evolving into newer forms on the back of technological advancements and changing consumer habits. Cans, PET bottles, and one-way glass bottles have emerged as more viable vehicles for the sales of beverage products.

HORECA sales of beverages (i.e. the food services sector) in China remain an important source of revenue – this is especially true for beer; around 95 per cent of glass bottle sales of beer are for on-premise consumption. However, in the face of decreasing average earnings per hectolitre of beer in China over the past few years, breweries are looking to the home consumption market to improve revenue growth. This is the same for other beverage makers.

The growing home consumption market has been identified as a key target to improve sales volumes, but it remains a challenge. Changes in demographics, consumption behaviour, purchase patterns, and the rise of organised retailers (supermarkets, convenience stores etc.) over the years have necessitated the increasing use of new primary packs and price point strategies to drive the home consumption volumes. These new primary packs have to incorporate solutions to address: Product shelf life (vital for carbonated beverages); ease of handling; distribution; and environmental concerns.

As competition increases, marketing and brand managers have to continually identify new ways of staying ahead of the competition and defend their products’ market share. This in turn has further increased the impetus on using the primary packs as an effective tool for brand differentiation on the shelf.

When considering the most effective home consumption primary pack for the Chinese market, physical factors such as the size, spread, and homogeneity of the consumer population, quality of roads and other distribution infrastructure, nature of retail trade need to be looked at. Looking at the development of markets in Europe, countries that have large populations and hence require high-capacity filling lines as well as transportation of goods over long distances due to a greater spread of target population have all developed into strong cans markets. The advent of modern retailing and consumer choice has helped to turn many Eastern European countries into can markets too.

Following the European experience cans have a clear case for developing as the preferred primary pack for Chinese beverage makers. The same experience was made by the cola majors, Coca Cola and Pepsi, who began shipping their beverages across long distances from the US to the Middle East market in the 70s and 80s.

However, a successful cans strategy needs to focus beyond addressing and conquering these physical business attributes. Even if there are clearly identified advantages of cans being the preferred packaging for home consumption, to achieve growth in sales any strategy needs to build in a clear market approach targeted towards influencing consumer behaviour in favour of cans.

On China

On China

$19.99

The eminent historian and strategist reflects on how China’s past illuminates its twenty-first-century trajectory, drawing on forty years of intimate acquaintance with the country and its leaders. In Untitled on China , Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to the country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. Drawing on historical records as well as on his conversations with Chinese leaders over the past forty years, Kissinger examines how China has approached diplomacy, strategy, and negotiation throughout its history and reflects on the consequences for the twenty-first-century world. As Kissinger underscores, the unique conditions under which China developed continue to shape its policies and attitudes toward the outside world. For centuries, China rarely encountered other societies of comparable size and sophistication. China was the "Middle Kingdom," treating the peoples on its periphery as vassal states. At the same time, Chinese statesmen-facing threats of invasion from without and the contests of competing factions within-developed a canon of strategic thought that prized the virtues of subtlety, patience, and indirection over feats of martial prowess. Untitled on China examines key episodes in Chinese foreign policy, from the earliest days through the twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on the modern era. Kissinger illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such events as the initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, the opening of relations with the United States, the Tiananmen Square crackdown, and China’s accession to the World Trade Organization. The book traces the evolution of Sino-American relations in the past sixty years, following their course from estrangement to strategic partnership and toward an uncertain future. Kissinger analyzes the two towering figures of the People’s Republic of China, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, and their divergent visions of China’s modern destiny. With a final chapter on China’s twenty-first-century world role, Untitled on China provides a sweeping historical perspective on Chinese foreign policy from one of the premier statesmen of the twentieth century.

China: A History

China: A History

$11.99

An accessible, authoritative single-volume narrative history of China. Most histories of China appear to have been written by sinologists for sinologists. As China rejoins and perhaps comes to dominate our world order, the need for an authoritative yet engaging history is universally acknowledged. Modelled on the author’s own ‘India: A History’, ‘China: A History’ is informed by a wide knowledge of the Asian context, an approach devoid of Euro-centric bias, and acclaimed narrative skills. Broadly chronological, the book presents a history of all the Chinas – including those regions (Yunnan, Tibet, Xinjiang, Mongolia, Manchuria) that account for two thirds of the People’s Republic of China land mass but which barely feature in its conventional history (which tends to concentrate on the succession of mainly north China imperial dynasties). The book also examines the many non-Chinese elements in China’s history – the impact of Buddhism, Islam and Christianity; the effects of trade; the nature of ‘barbarian’ invasion; the relevance of many imperial dynasties being of non-Chinese origin. Major archaeological discoveries in the last two decades afford a chance to flesh out and correct much of the written record. ‘China: A History’ will tell the epic story from the time of the Three Dynasties (2000-220 BC) to Chairman Mao and the current economic transformation of the country.

China, the US and the Power-Transition Theory

China, the US and the Power-Transition Theory

$43.95

China’s recent growth has called attention to the power-transition theory, which contends that the danger of a major war is the greatest when a rising dissatisfied challenger threatens to overtake a declining satisfied hegemon. Steve Chan questions this prevailing view by analyzing the extent of ongoing power shifts among the leading powers, exploring the portents for their future growth, and seeking indicators of their relative commitment to the existing international order. To better understand the strategic motivations of ascending and declining states, insights are drawn from prospect theory and past episodes of peaceful and violent transition (such as the end of the Cold War and the outbreak of the First and Second World Wars). He concludes that China is unlikely to instigate a confrontation with the US, and that whilst military conflict over the Taiwan Strait is possible, this is more likely to be due to China’s inability to prevent US involvement than its willingness to provoke the US.This book places China in a comparative and historical context, in which inquiry is informed by the experiences of other major powers and pertinent theories in international relations, such as those on extended deterrence, preventive war, and democratic peace. Its comparative and theoretical orientation and its contrarian perspective will be of great interest not only to students and scholars of international relations and Chinese politics, but also to policy makers and professionals.

Religion, Medicine and the Human Embryo in Tibet

Religion, Medicine and the Human Embryo in Tibet

$150

This book explores the cultural history of embryology in Tibet, in culture, religion, art and literature, and what this reveals about its medicine and religion. Filling a significant gap in the literature this is the first in-depth exploration of Tibetan medical history in the English language. It reveals the prevalence of descriptions of the development of the human body – from conception to birth – found in all forms of Tibetan religious literature, as well as in medical texts and in art. By analysing stories of embryology, Frances Garrett explores questions of cultural transmission and adaptation: How did Tibetan writers adapt ideas inherited from India and China for their own purposes? What original views did they develop on the body, on gender, on creation, and on life itself? The transformations of embryological narratives over several centuries illuminate key turning points in Tibetan medical history, and its relationship with religious doctrine and practice. Embryology was a site for both religious and medical theorists to contemplate profound questions of being and becoming, where topics such as pharmacology and nosology were left to shape secular medicine. The author argues that, in terms of religion, stories of human development comment on embodiment, gender, socio-political hierarchy, religious ontology, and spiritual progress. Through the lens of embryology, this book examines how these concerns shift as Tibetan history moves through the formative ‘renaissance’ period of the twelfth through to the seventeenth centuries.

The Chinese Third Revolutionary Civil War, 1945-49

The Chinese Third Revolutionary Civil War, 1945-49

$160

This book examines the Third Chinese Revolutionary Civil War of 1945-1949, which resulted in the victory of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over Chiang Kaishek and the Guomindang (GMD) and the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It provides a military and strategic history of how the CCP waged and ultimately won the war, the transformation its armed forces and how the Communist leadership interacted with each other. Whereas most explanations of the CCP’s eventual victory focus on the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45, when the revolution was supposedly won as a result of the communists’ invention of peasant nationalism, this book shows that the outcome of the revolution was not a foregone conclusion in 1945. It explains how the eventual victory of the communists resulted from important strategic decisions taken on both sides, in particular the remarkable transformation of the communist army from an insurgent / guerrilla force into a conventional army. The book also explores how the hierarchy of the People’s Republic of China developed during the war. It shows how Mao’s power was based as much on his military acumen as his political thought, above all his role in formulating and implementing a successful military strategy in the war of 1945-49. It also describes how other important figures, such as Lin Biao, Deng Xiaoping, Nie Rongzhen, Liu Shaoqi and Chen Yi, made their reputations during the conflict; and reveals the inner workings of the first political-military elite of the PRC. Overall, this book is an important resource for anyone seeking to understand the origins and early history of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Communist Partyand the People’s Liberation Army.

Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China

Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China

$175

Although the Chinese economy is growing at a very high rate, there are massive social dislocations arising as a result of economic restructuring. Though the scale of the problem is huge, very few studies have examined the changes in income inequality in the late 1990s due to a lack of data on household incomes. Based on extensive original research, this book redresses this imbalance, examining the issue of unemployment and the problems it has brought for the people of China. Investigating the market outcomes in post-reform urban China, the book focuses on the relationships between unemployment, inequality, and poverty. In addition, the authors provide an analysis on the emerging urban labour market and its stratified structure, job mobility, profit sharing, and the role of social capital. Empirical analysis is supported by rich data from nationally representative urban household and rural migrant surveys, providing the latest picture of the widening inequality in Chinese urban society.

War, Politics and Society in Early Modern China, 900-1795

$41.95

This comprehensive survey of Chinese military history is the only book in English to span the significant years from 900 – 1795. Peter Lorge questions current theories on China’s relationship to war, and argues that war was the most important tool used by the Chinese in building and maintaining their empire.Emphasizing the relationship between the military and politics, chapters are organised around specific military events and, Lorge argues, the strength of territorial claims and political impact of each dynasty were determined by their military capacity.Ideal as a course adoption text for Asian military studies, this is also valuable for students of Chinese studies, military studies and Chinese history.

''Mandela went to China...and India too'': Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

”Mandela went to China…and India too”: Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

$49.99

The cultural landscape of South Africa is reflected in the songs and games of young children whose music often embodies the social and political history of the world around them. My research with young children in the Limpopo province of South Africa is indicative of how children of similar ages identify with the idea of South Africa as a nation and how children use music as an educational tool to engage with their social and cultural identities.;This dissertation examines how music, education and the media impact the culture of childhood in South Africa and draws on the political and social history of South Africa that is enmeshed in the musical education of children today. The purpose of the study is to understand how young children utilize and experience music as a tool to explore, and consequently educate themselves in relationship to their social and cultural histories. Based on scholarship that bridges the fields of music education, sociology, child development, media studies and ethnomusicology, this dissertation aims to outline how children’s musical cultures are not mere copycats of adult musical systems, but rather intricate memes, or units of cultural information, that are propagated and sustained within the culture of childhood.;Contributing to an understanding of the role of music in children’s lives in Limpopo, this dissertation examines how music contributes to identity formation in childhood. This process is explored through an examination of local, national and global influences on the musical language of childhood in South Africa. From handclapping songs to traditional music, from commercials to programs such as Takalani Sesame, the musical worlds of children in Limpopo give voice to an understanding of how children engage with and sustain unique musical cultures.

''Opium pushing and Bible smuggling'': Religion and the cultural politics of British imperialist ambition in China.

”Opium pushing and Bible smuggling”: Religion and the cultural politics of British imperialist ambition in China.

$49.99

In the early decades of the nineteenth century, British missionaries disrupted the century-old tea-trade triangle by their insistence on penetrating the closed Chinese empire. Their cultural knowledge made these missionaries attractive potential allies for merchants while also giving accounts of their mission a literary appeal. Although missionary writing was intended for specifically Evangelical audiences, the influence of these works extended to popular culture and into the crafting of foreign policy for the Opium War as the political situation in China intensified due to opium trafficking.;The first chapter traces the scholarly traditions on mission and imperialism, and the missionary movement in China. It also shows that two differing perspectives on mission and empire derive from competing subcultures in early-nineteenth-century Britain: middle-class popular culture and the growing Evangelical subculture. The second chapter adapts the notions of “imagined communities” and an “imperial archive” for considering ways in which Evangelicals created literature—an “Evangelical Archive”—that formulated and maintained their conceptual unity both at home and with their missionaries and converts abroad. Aimed Benjamin Fischer at recruiting missionaries, encouraging believers, providing ethnology, and garnering support, mission narratives first emerged from the difficult mission context of China. The third chapter contrasts Evangelical representations of China with those by Thomas DeQuincey, Jesuit missionaries, and travel writers. Encoding spiritual terms for both spiritual and material subjects of attention, mission narratives assisted in coloring China as dark and depraved in opposition to Christianity’s enlightening brightness. The fourth chapter examines the work of Charles Gutzlaff, Journal of Three Voyages, and demonstrates a shift in the Evangelical approach to both British culture and foreign peoples, and thus a refiguring of the relationship between mission
