A Topography Of Confucian Discourse $28.41 Throughout history, numerous scholars and intellectuals have tried to define Confucianism one way or another. Despite their efforts, the voices of those who claim to have found the essence of Confucianism are as much at odds as ever. A Topography of Confucian Discourse analyzes Confucian discussion in diverse historical settings, examining how Confucianism has served the different purposes of biased interpreters and how they have manipulated Confucian discourse. To explore their hidden desires, Lee Seung-hwan critically observes various historical contexts in which people interpreted Confucianism: in the heyday of the Jesuit Missionaries, the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the period of Western Imperialism, late twentieth-century postmodern America, Tokugawa Japan, Choson Korea, China, Taiwan, South Korea, as well as Singapore. The author successfully historicizes Confucian discourse, explaining why, against a certain political background, a certain view on Confucianism has to arise. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lee Seung-hwan received his PhD from the University of Hawaii. A professor of philosophy at Korea University, Lee has authored several books including The Sociopolitical Re-illumination of Confucian Thought and The Exchange of E-Mail between the West and the East for 127 Days. Lee has been known as a progressive philosopher of Chinese philosophy and has dealt with the inherent conflicts in liberal political thought.ABOUT THE TRANSLATORJaeyoon Song is a PhD candidate at Harvard University and is interested in Chinese intellectual history and philosophy. He is currently working on Song discourse on government, especially the rise of aproto-constitutional debate in Southern Song China. |

Behind the Silence: Chinese Voices on Abortion $92 Behind the Silence is the first in-depth work in any language to explore the diverse perspectives of mainland Chinese regarding induced abortion and fetal life in the context of the world’s most ambitious and intrusive family planning program. Through his investigation of public silence, official standpoints, forgotten controversies from the imperial era, popular opinions, women’s personal stories, doctors’ narratives, and the problem of coerced abortion, Nie Jing-Bao brings to light a surprising range of beliefs concerning fetal life and the morality of abortion, yet finds overall an acceptance of national population policies. China’s internal plurality, the author argues, must be taken seriously if the West is to open a fruitful cross-cultural dialogue. |

Between Silences $21.11 Mixing autobiography with invented other voices, this book is an extraordinary meditation on what it means to have lived the history of China in the second half of the twentieth century. At its best, Ha Jin”s language is as accessible, penetrating, and mysterious as Pound”s Cathay. This is a profound book, an event. –Frank Bidart In these poems Ha Jin gives voice to the millions whose lives were altered and whose tongues were silenced by the Cultural Revolution. . . .If Ha Jin speaks in tongues in these poems, we feel him behind those voices–the hidden director behind the scenes–never as a presence filled with stridency and self-congratulation; he brings a great empathy and compassion to his depiction of the fallible men and women whose acts and attitudes together make up history. –Roger Gilbert, Hungry Mind Review |

China CEO: A Case Guide for Business Leaders in China $24.95 CHINA CEO: A Case Guide for Business Leaders in China Some Western business leaders are moving into China without any clear knowledge of the many pitfalls they will encounter: the weak rule of law, forceful governmental intervention, a scarcity of managerial talent, the likelihood of counterfeiting, the fast paced business environment and surprisingly aggressive local competitors. This book uses case studies to both illuminate and examine these key managerial challenges. Each case focuses on a specific topic and is complemented with commentaries from professors and executives who have extensive front-line experience in China. The cases are the product of three-year research and are well-tested in MBA and executive courses. The authors’ philosophy is that readers can learn most effectively through the experience of others captured in real cases! The book includes a broad range of companies, such as Emerson, Eli Lily, General Motors, Peugeot, Carrefour, Daimler-Chrysler, Picanol. It also includes more personal experiences concerning the many challenges of expatriate-living in China , some of whom have started their own businesses. The book provides concise but insightful analysis to help readers to get the most from the case studies. As a result, this book will help you get better prepared to face the varied challenges you will find in China. These cases complement the material presented in a previous work, China CEO: Voices of Experience from 20 International Business Leaders, also published by John Wiley & Sons. |
