”Mandela went to China…and India too”: Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa. $49.99 The cultural landscape of South Africa is reflected in the songs and games of young children whose music often embodies the social and political history of the world around them. My research with young children in the Limpopo province of South Africa is indicative of how children of similar ages identify with the idea of South Africa as a nation and how children use music as an educational tool to engage with their social and cultural identities.;This dissertation examines how music, education and the media impact the culture of childhood in South Africa and draws on the political and social history of South Africa that is enmeshed in the musical education of children today. The purpose of the study is to understand how young children utilize and experience music as a tool to explore, and consequently educate themselves in relationship to their social and cultural histories. Based on scholarship that bridges the fields of music education, sociology, child development, media studies and ethnomusicology, this dissertation aims to outline how children’s musical cultures are not mere copycats of adult musical systems, but rather intricate memes, or units of cultural information, that are propagated and sustained within the culture of childhood.;Contributing to an understanding of the role of music in children’s lives in Limpopo, this dissertation examines how music contributes to identity formation in childhood. This process is explored through an examination of local, national and global influences on the musical language of childhood in South Africa. From handclapping songs to traditional music, from commercials to programs such as Takalani Sesame, the musical worlds of children in Limpopo give voice to an understanding of how children engage with and sustain unique musical cultures. |

A Rising China and Security in East Asia $47.95 This volume provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the security discourse of Chinese policy elites on the major powers in East Asia in relation to China’s self-perception as a rising power. It is the first book-length study that utilizes International Relations theories systematically to analyze Chinese security perceptions of the United States, Japan and Russia, and the debate among Chinese international relations specialists on how China should respond to the perceived challenge from the major powers to its rise to a global status.Rex Li argues that the security discourse of Chinese policy analysts is closely linked to their conception of China’s identity and their desire and endeavour to construct a great power identity for China. Drawing on extensive and up-to-date Chinese-language sources, the study demonstrates that Chinese elites perceive the power, aspirations and security strategies of other East Asian powers primarily in terms of their implications for China’s pursuit of great power status. This new work will contribute significantly to the on-going academic and policy debate on the nature and repercussions of China’s rise. This book will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students and scholars of Asian security, China’s foreign relations, security studies and international relations. |

A study of aerosol indirect effect for cumulus clouds on a global scale. $69 Using case study approach my investigation on aerosol’s effects on fair weather cumulus clouds shows that not only can aerosol reduce cloud droplet sizes like in the case of stratiform clouds, but also they can increase droplet sizes. Atmospheric water vapor loading explains nearly 70% of variations in the dependence of droplet size on aerosol loading for cases over Eastern United States. This finding withstands serious scrutinizing under different scenarios of artificial correlations. A further study on a global scale indicates that only two areas, Eastern US and coastal region of Southeast China, show increasing trend of droplet size with aerosol loading. Results from other regions agree well with findings from past studies further ruling out artificial correlation. Relationship between aerosol loading and cloud liquid water path differs significantly for marine stratocumulus clouds and continental cumuli. Two possible explanations for our findings are confirmed by state-of-the-art cloud resolving model simulations.;Deep convective clouds properties are shown to obey a few universally observable relationships. Their cloud top ice particle sizes are positively correlated with their vertical height and they are significantly affected by topography; their optical depth distributions have signature shapes associated with individual regions; their brightness temperature distributions show agreement with the fixed anvil temperature hypothesis. A conceptual model is proposed to understand cloud hydrometeor evolution and is used to study aerosol’s influence. Anthropogenic pollution and smoke are shown to decrease ice particle sizes by delaying coalescence process and prolonging condensational growth. As a result cloud glaciation height is increased that possibly leads to invigoration of cloud development. Dust particles are demonstrated to increase ice particle sizes probably by acting as giant condensation nuclei or ice nuclei. Ice particle size vertical structure is |

Ageing in Asia: Asia’s Position in the New Global Demography $160 The volume takes four key themes related to ageing – the experience of old age; intergenerational relations; economics of and social policy for ageing; longevity and the culture of ageing – and examines how these issues are emerging in different regions of Asia, specifically, the former Soviet Union, South Asia, China, Japan and South-East Asia. In placing these Asian cases studies in the broader context of debates about, and policies on, ageing more generally, it brings them into the mainstream of comparative research on ageing from which they have been too often excluded. As the studies show, the relationship between ageing and poverty is a complex one and often reflects policy towards the aged rather than that the aged themselves are unproductive and dependent. Ageing, moreover, can no longer be considered as simply a national question; we also need to consider the implications of its global dimension in terms of issues such as human rights and quality of life. |

Agricultural Research, Livelihoods, and Poverty: Studies of Economic and Social Impacts in Six Countries $40.28 Those who study global poverty and ways to reduce it face a perennial set of questions: Do advances in knowledge, research, and technology make a real difference in the lives of poor people? What effect does research have on the poor? Who benefits? The contributors to Agricultural Research, Livelihoods, and Poverty shed light on these questions through a collection of case studies that explore the types of impact that agricultural research has had on livelihoods and poverty in low-income countries. The studies focus on the impact of research carried out by several institutions that collaborate with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the leading nonprofit consortium conducting international agricultural research for the developing world. The countries covered include Bangladesh, China, India, Kenya, Mexico, and Zimbabwe. The contributors employ micro-level case studies and macro-level analysis and combine methods and perspectives from economics, sociology, and anthropology. They examine whether and how agricultural research has affected livelihoods, vulnerability, and poverty; the extent to which poverty reduction can be attributed to different technologies; and the economic, social, and cultural contexts in which technologies affect different social and economic groups. This book will help researchers in the agricultural and social sciences, as well as others concerned with development policy and its implementation, to better understand the pathways connecting research and poverty reduction and to guide future study of this vitally important issue.CONTRIBUTORS: Michelle Adato, Javier Becerril, Suraiya Begum, Mauricio R. Agriculture in World History $29.95 Civilization from its origins has depended on the food, fibre, and other commodities produced by farmers. In this unique exploration of the world history of agriculture, Mark B. Tauger looks at farmers, farming, and their relationships to non-farmers from the classical societies of the Mediterranean and China through to the twenty-first century. Viewing farmers as the most important human interface between civilization and the natural world, Agriculture in World History examines the ways that urban societies have both exploited and supported farmers, and together have endured the environmental changes and crises that threatened food production. Accessibly written and following a chronological structure, Agriculture in World History illuminates these topics through studies of farmers in numerous countries all over the world from Antiquity to the contemporary period. Key themes addressed include the impact of global warming, the role of political and social transformations, and the development of agricultural technology. In particular, the book highlights the complexities of recent decades: increased food production, declining numbers of farmers, and environmental, economic, and political challenges to increasing food production against the demands of a growing population. This wide-ranging survey will be an indispensable text for students of world history, and for anyone interested in the historical development of the present agricultural and food crises. |

Alliance Curse: How America Lost the Third World $29.95 In Alliance Curse, Hilton Root illustrates that recent U.S. foreign policy is too often misguided, resulting in misdirected foreign aid and alliances that stunt political and economic development among partner regimes, leaving America on the wrong side of change. Many alliances with third world dictators, ostensibly of mutual benefit, reduce incentives to govern for prosperity and produce instead political and social instability and economic failure. Yet again, in the war on terror and in the name of preserving global stability, America is backing authoritarian regimes that practice repression and plunder. It is as if the cold war never ended. While espousing freedom and democracy, the U.S. contradicts itself by aiding governments that do not share those values. In addition to undercutting its own stated goal of promoting freedom, America makes the developing world even more wary of its intentions. Yes, the democracy we preach arouses aspirations and attracts immigrants, but those same individuals become our sternest critics; having learned to admire American values, they end up deploring U.S. policies toward their own countries. Long-term U.S. security is jeopardized by a legacy of resentment and distrust.liance Curse p proposes an analytical foundation for national security that challenges long-held assumptions about foreign affairs. It questions the wisdom of diplomacy that depends on questionable linkages or outdated suppositions. The end of the Soviet Union did not portend the demise of communism, for example. Democracy and socialism are not incompatible systems. Promoting democracy by linking it with free trade risks overemphasizing the latter goal at the expense of theformer. The growing tendency to play China against India in an effort to retain American global supremacy will hamper relations with both-an intolerable situation in today’s interdependent world.Root buttresses his analysis with case studies of American foreign policy toward |

An analysis of women’s development and gender equity at two universities in south China. $49.99 UNESCO has identified gender problems in higher education and launched a series of programs to strengthen gender mainstreaming. However, recent research on Chinese women in higher education and the Program for the Development of Chinese Women reveals that the Chinese higher education system has not been effectively challenged from the gender perspective. This research has explored the barriers as well as good practices for women’s development and gender equity at two universities in South China. The core activities and policies have been examined from gender perspective, including curriculum, leadership, career development, human resource management, and community service. This research adopted a qualitative case study methodology. In-depth interviews and document analysis were the major tools. Top leaders, administrators in the related functional divisions, selected faculty members and students were interviewed. Indicators for gender mainstreaming have been produced.;The contributions of this research to Chinese women/gender studies and education are multi-fold. Theoretically, a synthesized theory on the Socialist View of Gender Equity has been proposed, which connects Chinese socialism with global feminism. The alternative theory on the Developmental Model of Gender Sensitivity for better gender understanding and communication as well as the gender mainstreaming model for higher education system are breakthroughs in gender and education. As for curriculum innovation and discipline development, the suggestion for integrating gender perspective into the mainstream moral citizenship education can be an effective way to develop interdisciplinary women/gender studies offering a lens of social equity in general education for Chinese college students. |

Applications of remote sensing and GIS in surface hydrology: Snow cover, soil moisture and precipitation. $49.99 Studies on surface hydrology can generally be classified into two categories, observation for different components of surface water, and modeling their dynamic movements. This study only focuses on observation part of surface water components: snow cover, soil moisture, and precipitation. Moreover, instead of discussion on the detailed algorithm and instrument technique behind each component, this dissertation pours efforts on analysis of the standard remotely sensed products and their applications under different settings.;First in Chapter 2, validation of MODIS Terra 8-day maximum snow cover composite (MOD10A2) in the Northern Xinjiang, China, from 2000-2006, shows that the 8-day MODIS/Terra product has high agreements with in situ measurements as the in situ snow depth is larger or equal to 4 cm, while the agreement is low for the patchy snow as the in situ snow depth less than 4 cm. According to the in situ observation, this chapter develops an empirical algorithm to separate the cloud-covered pixels into snow and no snow. Continued long-term production of MODIS-type snow cover product is critical to assess water resources of the study area, as well as other larger scale global environment monitoring.;Terra and Aqua satellites carry the same MODIS instrument and provide two parallel MODIS daily snow cover products at different time (local time 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, respectively). Chapter 3 develops an algorithm and automated scripts to combine the daily MODIS Terra (MOD10A1) and Aqua (MYD10A1) snow cover products, and to automatically generate multi-day Terra-Aqua snow cover image composites, with flexible starting and ending dates and a user-defined cloud cover threshold.;Chapter 4 systematically compares the difference between MODIS Terra and Aqua snow cover products within a hydrologic year of 2003-2004, validates the MODIS Terra and Aqua snow cover products using in situ measurements in Northern Xinjiang, and compares the accuracy among the standard |

Behind great walls: Modes of employment among migrant construction workers in China’s informal labor market. $49.99 This is a study of "undocumented" migrant workers in the informal sector of China’s construction industry. It is about the informal economy, undocumented (illegal) migration and the gendered nature of the global labor market. It starts by "opening the black box" of the informal labor market uncovering significant variance in these workers’ experiences. Based on intensive ethnographic observation of illegal migrant labor in the construction industry in China, this dissertation analyses the interconnected patterns of labor markets and employment relations experienced by these workers in two cities, Beijing and Guangzhou. I identify three such patterns, which I refer to as "modes of employment": embedded, mediated, and individualized. In embedded employment, mechanisms such as social capital, bounded solidarity, enforceable trust, and the reciprocity of social networks in migrant enclaves shape both access to jobs and employment relations on the job. In mediated employment, workers get jobs through labor contractors who also play a key role in regulating employment relations in various ways. In individualized employment, workers find employment through unregulated spot markets. Workers are inserted into employment relations as separate individuals rather than as members of a migrant enclave social network or as dependants of a labor contractor, and as a result they are particularly vulnerable to despotic and extremely exploitative treatment. This micro level analysis maps out the variance and shows how these how "modes of employment" shape the ways these migrants are inserted spatially into the city, the labor process, regimes of control, gender, migratory patterns and the ways in which these migrants experience their "illegal" status. The study also offers a macro analysis which nuances our understandings of how the state shapes the informal labor. Most studies focus on how more or less regulation and enforcement |
