Perceptions of China English

In contrast to ‘standard’ English, some participants hold the following opinions on China English:

China English is just a joke. It is only used when people make fun and tell jokes (Male, 21, 5 months). It [China English] would not be understood by foreigners (Male, 20-25, 5 months).

The majority of the participants also shared the view that English was primarily a tool for international communication: because most of the countries in the world are English-speaking countries, if we want to be understood by people in other countries, we need to know English for international communication (Male, 23, 5 months). Many people can speak English and many countries are English-speaking for example Japan (Female, 25-30, 6 months). English is most Replica Watches widely used, a lingua franca for non-English speaking countries, we can communicate with much more people even if we don’t know each others’ mother language (Female, 22, 5 months). Although English is viewed as universal in institutional discourse, some participants did express their interest in Western culture as a reason for learning English. This appears to be a mismatch between the institutional and learners’ discourses of English which, however, is not addressed in this article.

Apart from being a universal modern skill, English is also a tool to let the world know about China in both the institutional and learners’ discourses. One article from the People’s Daily remarks that Despite the neutral role ascribed to English as a universal modern skill, this role of English as a tool to let the world know about China is a somewhat nationalistic one. The evolution of Chinese history, culture and civilisation was presented to the world in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The ceremony itself highlighted the four great inventions of gunpowder, compass, paper and printing, and the traditional Chinese value of harmony introduced to the world the greatness and rise of the country (Shuang, Wang & Gao, 9 August, 2008:1). Not only is English a tool to know about the world for China, as Orton (2007) illustrates, it is also a desire for China to show its glorious past and intention for harmonious international relations to the international community. To achieve this aim the universal tongue, i.e. ‘standard’ English, is the best vehicle.

Three out of the ten participants pointed out the role of English as a tool to let the world know about China. One participant, for example, asserted that: It [English] is definitely useful no matter for whom…we need to Omega Replica Watches introduce Chinese to the West by learning English. English is useful for everyone to introduce China’s greatness to the West… just like some of the great inventions in China. Western people think they invented them but actually China had invented them a few centuries earlier (Female, 25, 2 years and 6 months). Interesting enough, this participant’s comment on the four great inventions of ancient China was made before the Opening Ceremony. The reclamation of China’s international status appears to be a common goal of the government and the public. One participant seemed concerned about Westerners’ false perceptions of China and said: ‘Westerners still have some misunderstandings about China. We need to learn English to tell them about China.’

Both the institutional and learners’ discourses about English, as the study has shown, describe English as a universal skill for modernisation and international communication, as well as a tool to let the world know about China. ‘Standard’ American (and to a lesser extent, British) English is the preferred variety to learn and use as, on the one hand, it is the best vehicle to learn modernisation; and on the other hand, it is not regarded as associated with a particular culture. The list of the ascribed roles of English in China as examined in this paper is definitely not conclusive. Future research not only needs to explore students’ views in Mainland China, but also overseas Chinese students’ attitudes in depth as this group is increasing in number, and many more overseas students return to China after graduation.

A different perspective on collecting English ceramics is presented in Mary Frank Gaston’s, English China. The focus in this book is on objects, with an emphasis on table wares and unique ceramics made for daily life during the mid-tolate nineteenth century and early half of the twentieth century. Today, biscuit jars, cheese dishes, and teapots, as well as bowls and plates from that era, form the basis for china collections. Many of the old items also had functions that are no longer recognized in most of contemporary life, but their collectibility has been greatly enhanced. Categories are defined and represented by over 500 photographs – from apothecary jars to wine jugs. China is shown from more than 100 manufacturers. Decorations range from hand-painted and applied work to a variety of transfer patterns, including relevant examples from the author’s other books on English ceramics, Flow Blue China and Blue Willow. A current price range is listed for each item. 2008 values.

A Manual for Teaching English in China

A Manual for Teaching English in China

$22.48

Come with us now to the first day of class to teach English in China. Both students and teacher’s hearts pound with anticipation as students file into the room, chatting and pretending not to notice the foreign teacher standing behind his desk. But they can’t help glancing at him anyway for a first look. Laughter mingles with the sound of books and chairs clanking together. A buzzer sounds in the hall, and Bill Burkett, affectionately known in China by his students as "Mr. Bill," begins. A Manual for Teaching English in China takes us from the first day’s buzzer through the first weeks, months, and semesters of teaching English in China, sharing numerous stories, laughs, interesting facts, and many effective ways of teaching ESL. A Manual for Teaching English in China is packed with Bill Burkett’s practical ideas, methods, and teaching techniques that can actually be used to teach ESL anywhere. Bill Burkett recently returned from a seven year stint of teaching English in the universities and training schools of Henan, China. An internationally renowned public speaker, Burkett has lived in 46 nations in the last 43 years. He developed a strong interest in linguistics which was fueled by his close association with interpreters. In Chinese classrooms where he taught English, he conducted active research, experimenting and taking student polls. He concentrated on eliminating speech impediments and strong accents. His education, experiences, and research shaped his philosophy of teaching English as a Second Language and formed the basis of his first ESL book, A Manual for Teaching English in China. Following the manual is Secrets to Better English which reveals a proven method of teaching ESL without accent. Although Burkett’s doctorate is in philosophy, his love is making a difference in his students’ lives by teaching diction and the skills of speech.

The world is anything but unfamiliar with diaspora: Jewish, African, Armenian, Roma-Gipsy, Filipino/a, Tamil, Irish or Italian, even Japanese. But few have carried so global a resonance as that of China. What, then, of literary-cultural expression, the huge body of fiction which has addressed itself to that plurality of lives and geographies and which has come to be known as “After China”? This collection of essays offers bearings on those written in English, and in which both memory and story are central, spanning the USA to Australia, Canada to the UK, Hong Kong to Singapore, with yet others of more transnational nature. This collection opens with a reprise of woman-authored Chinese American fiction using Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan as departure points. In turn follow readings of the oeuvres of Tan and Frank Chin. A comparative essay takes up novels by Canadian, American and Australian authors from the perspective of migrancy as fracture. Chinese Canada comes into view in accounts of SKY Lee, Wayson Choy, Evelyn Lau and Larissa Lai. Australia under Chinese literary auspices is given a comparative mapping through the fiction of Brian Castro and Ouyang Yu. The English language “China fiction” of Singapore and Hong Kong is located in essays centred, respectively, on Martin Booth and Po Wah Lam, and Hwee Hwee Tan and Colin Cheong. The collection rounds out with portraits of Timothy Mo as British transnational author, a selection of contextual Chinese British stories and art, and the phenomenon of “Chinese Chick Lit” novels. China Fictions/English Language will be of interest to readers drawn both to “After China” as diasporic literary heritage and comparative literature in general.

A captivating coming-of-age novel in the tradition of "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" During the darkest days of Cultural Revolution, a twelve-year-old boy named Love Liu wonders what life is like beyond the region of Xinjiang in Chinaas remote northwest. Here conformity is valued above all else, and suspicion governs every exchange among neighbors, classmates, and even friends. Into this stifling atmosphere comes a tall, clean-shaven teacher from Shanghai, wearing an elegant gray wool jacket and carrying an English dictionary under his arm. With the dictionary as his disposal, Love Liu turns to it for answers to his most pressing questions about love and life, and a whole new world opens up for him. His classmatesathe bright, troubled Sunrise Huang and the rowdy, impoverished Garbage Liaalso find hope in the unfamiliar and tantalizing sounds of English, but in an atmosphere of accusation and recrimination, one in which their teacher is deemed morally suspect and mere innuendo can cost someone his life, their ideals face a test more challenging than any theyall take in the classroom. A major bestseller in China, where it was voted best novel of the year independently by the critics and the general public, "English" is a transcendent novel about the power of language to launch a journey of self-discovery.

Testing Spoken English Achievement for Non-English Majors in China

Testing Spoken English Achievement for Non-English Majors in China

$21.98

This book tries to solve a practical problem, that is, the general lack of the spoken English achievement test (SEAT) in the college English teaching for non-English majors in mainland China. To achieve this purpose, it first reviews theories and techniques relevant to speaking and language testing, then conducts empirical research into four SEAT formats, and finally puts forward a presentation and discussion (P&D) SEAT format. It can make the "impractical" SEAT practical, thus promoting testing, and in turn, teaching and learning of spoken English for non-English majors in Chinese universities in order to meet the social and learners’ individual needs for the English speaking skill.

In August, 2003 I made arrangements to teach English in China, but when I got there, there was no job. So begins a very interesting six-month stay in Beijing. Within these pages you’ll hear stories of college life, the move to a market economy, corruption, burnout, mobsters, government as benevolent parent, the surprising gravitation to all things Western, and the tribulations of a foreigner trying to start a new business. (Oh, yes, and the experiences of a newbie teaching English in a foreign land ) You are also introduced to some of my students, who in their own words talk about their lives, aspirations, and frustrations.
